A Public Encounter

by Laura Crichton

I have been a strong believer in breastfeeding wherever and whenever! My older children were breastfed on hillsides, beaches, trains, planes as well as the usual shopping center or coffee shop.

I breastfeed while alone or with friends or family and in open view of the public. I believe I breastfeed discreetly but proudly. Usually, if I'm alone while breastfeeding in public I will think of comebacks to negative comments that I might be confronted with. Sometimes I come up with witty retorts, and sometimes my mind is just blank and I'm afraid I'd just be completely dumbfounded!

However, even though I'm well-prepared most of the time with an answer to someone's negative comments, I have never had to deal with anyone even giving me so much as a dirty look!

One day, I thought I was in luck! An elderly man from a nearby table at the food court that we were lunching at approached my table. I furiously tried to come up with one of my comebacks as I felt my face grow a shade of hot pink. How dare he feel he can share his opinions with me!

You can imagine how I felt when the dear old man put his hand on my shoulder, looked into my eyes and said "What a wonderful thing it is to see you breastfeed that beautiful baby. There should be more of it!"

I was dumbfounded!
