Moms talk about Breast Milk Leakage

About two weeks after having my first child, I went to visit a friend about an hour away. After the initial greetings, we decided to drive to the local grocery store and pick up some items for dinner. Soon after we left, I noticed I had leaked through both breast pads and my dark pink shirt was soaked. My friend said she would just run into the store and I could stay in the car.

However, no sooner had we parked and my friend gotten out of the car, than a friend of hers approached the car. I did not know this person and it looked very odd and rude for me to sit there in the car. I emerged from the car to shake her hand as we were introduced. Since my problem was glaringly obvious, my gracious friend said, "She just had a baby and is embarrassed because the baby wet on her right before we left." The other person graciously pretended to believe this but I was still mortified!

From then on I always carried an extra t-shirt and bra in the diaper bag. Live and learn!

I was at dental office for a cleaning. I had just checked the padding of my bra. This was to make sure I was not leaking. The dental assistant sent me the waiting room. Everyone in the waiting area kept looking at me but smiling. A little boy came up to me and said "Look Mommy she spilled juice on her just like I did." The right side of my shirt had a huge wet spot.

I was in line at the grocery store and I noticed people looking at me strangely but I didn't get it. I got up to the check out line and the cashier said Ma'am, are you okay and I said sure why? Well, the cashier said you may have spilled something on your shirt because it's wet. I was so embarrassed at that time I just walked out without getting any groceries and drove straight home.

Simply put, my story is one in which I was completely oblivious to at the time, thankfully! I would leak from the opposite breast as I nursed nearly every time, unless I mashed that breast flat! In public, that was my only option. At home, especially at night, I would doze with my baby as we nursed. I wasn't aware of the fact that my leaking breast would spray my poor unsuspecting husband as I dozed, leaving him with a milk mist. Months after my daughter weaned herself, I found places in my room around my bed where the milk spray had left evidence of my previous movements!

During the first few months of breastfeeding my son Max, I was constantly experiencing problems with leaking milk and let down even when my baby was no where in sight. On one of these occasions I ran across the street from our apartment late one evening to buy a quart of milk. I didn't bother to put a bra or let alone pads under my tank top for such a short trip.

While I was standing by the counter and waiting on line I thought to myself that Max should be hungry any minute now. Just as the thought of feeding him entered my mind the let down reflex came in and down came the milk- not just wetting my shirt but squirting through it, pooling onto the counter a few inches away.

The young cashier had no idea that it was me leaking and began to inspect the quart of milk in my hand for a leak until he saw my wet t-shirt and jokingly asked my why I would buy a store brand when I could obviously make my own. Mortified I ran back to my apartment (with the milk) narrowly escaped my doorman on the way.

When my son Zach was 2 months old he wanted to eat every two hours so you can imagine that he did most of his nursing while I was still half asleep.

I usually leak pretty heavily when he starts crying so I wear my bra and nursing pads to bed. One particular night I heard him crying so I stumbled out of bed and took off my bra to prepare for the feeding. I happened to notice that he had a dirty diaper because I could smell him.

Not wanting to fully wake him for the diaper change, I gingerly removed his nightie and proceeded to apply a fresh diaper. I noticed that he was completely soaked after just changing him and figured that he had peed while I was fumbling for a clean diaper. I removed his diaper again but by this time he was fully awake kicking, laughing and squealing. Before I could put another diaper on him a fresh explosion of poop flew out everywhere and you guessed it, he was kicking the goo all over the place!

Somehow I managed to get that mess cleaned up, slapped another clean diaper on him and snapped his jammies back up. I finally picked him up to nurse and he was wet again I couldn't believe it, but this time his jams were completely soaked.

I had been trying to do all this in a very dimly lit room so I wouldn't wake him, but when I finally had the sense to turn the overhead light on, I looked down to find that both my breasts were practically down pouring on him!

It was not one of my better moments, but I can look back on it now and really laugh!
