Breastfeeding Twins and Tampon Commercials
By Erin GilhulyI have had the most wonderful experience nursing my brand new twin boys! I have a 3 1/2 year old daughter who I nursed for 14 months. I loved every minute of it and was thrilled when I was able to make it over a year. Well when I found out I was having twins, I was worried!! How can I possibly nurse two babies at once? The challenge was overwhelming. I read about it and kept looking at pictures of smiling twin moms nursing their infants. It reminded me of the tampon commercials where all you see are beautiful women wearing white talking about how happy they feel on their period. Needless to say, I was worried, concerned and already felt hopelessly inadequate...and I hadn't even met my sons yet!! Then my big sister Shelley bought me the E-Z Nursing Pillow, designed for twins. I call it the "super boppy", my husband calls it "the barge". Talk about intimidating!! I thought, how am I going to do this? It's crazy to think that I can do this! The boys came and nursing them was an instant success. The hospital staff was amazed. The lactation consultant even wanted to take pictures for their brochure. And...here I am. The boys are 15 weeks old and I have breastfed them exclusively!! I am so happy, proud, excited, motivated...all of those happy thoughts. As scared as I was before they came is as happy as I am now that I'm accomplishing my goal. My husband has been wonderful. My daughter even helps situate the "super boppy" so I can nurse them at once. I try to find time for them one-on-one which is tough but absolutely worth it. They're going to be sharing for the rest of their lives so it's nice to give them each some time to eat in peace without butting heads with a brother. I went back to work last week so I'm pumping 25 ounces a day to cover two feedings each. That's going great too.
It really is an attitude and a commitment. You need a strong network and a whole lot of patience!!
Here's a shot of the boys, Brendan on the left and Colin on the right. Big sister Eavan is in the middle. s Twin moms need to know that it's possible and that they can do it!! Bring on the triplets... |
