Breastfeeding, Pregnant and Beyond

By Janice

Still in the hospital.  No family other than my husband for thousands of miles.  I convinced the hospital to allow my husband and my almost 3 year old son to stay for almost three days with me after my c-section.

Even though my husband had to stay with my son during the surgery, they gave us a room directly across from the OR.  The hospital staff let my husband and son stand by the door to see the baby as soon as they took my newborn out of the room.  None of the hospital staff could believe I was still breastfeeding my older son.  When they saw me breastfeeding them both they thought it was both incredible and weird.

It was hard especially with the large fresh wound on my abdomen, but breastfeeding them both did help my milk come in quicker.  I wish more women knew that it is possible to breastfeed while you are pregnant and beyond.

Tandem breastfeeding has a lot of benefits.  It can be hard and  frustrating, but well worth it in the end.  I still tandem breastfeed my 3 year old and the baby is 8 months.
