Do You Really Know What You Are Working On?

by Tresea Alexander

I went back to work when my daughter was 8 weeks old.

I already had all the pumps and accessories from my pervious child.

After a few days my double easy Medela pump just quit working.

I have a good working relationship with my maintenance manager so I took it to him, you know this was an emergency.

He knew I was nursing and pumped at work.

He has a daughter that has a child the same age as my 2 year old and we had similar nursing issues and candidly talked about them. So he was okay with it.

The funny thing happened when I was in his office with the pump and cord.

One of the maintenance guys came in to ask something and then the plant manager and the electrical engineer ended up there.

These guys had no idea what they were working on but being guys they were all messing with it.

You would think someone would have questioned what I was doing when I (inventory control) was so concerned about the electrical device not working and telling the guy that just came in with black grease all over him to keep his hands off, but they just kept going.

The electrical guy figured out it was the cord.

He got another cord from his office and said this will fit, it was the same type plug.

They plugged it in and it worked, but I could tell it was wrong because the cycle sound was way off.

Imagine their eyes when I told them that wouldn't work and had to explain to them what the thing was.

The plant manager, and electrical engineer were as red as fire.

The maintenance manager and myself laughed and laughed.

My husband and I work at the same company.

My husband and the plant manager had a discussion about my breastpump later. The plant manager said that he thought I had been just as embarrassed.

My husband told him that he had learned from the previous child that I didn't get embarrassed about nursing or anything to do with it.

He told him, and I quote "She'll pull a boob out just about anywhere".

I guess you really had to be there for it to have been that funny but we will all be laughing about this for a long time to come.

They've already made reference to the question, "Do you really know what you are working on?"
