Excuse Me, Dear...

by RoxAnne Lane Christley

A trip to the grocery store seems as routine as ever to a stay-at-home mom, however, this particular day was a totally different story.

I had just started getting out after the birth of my second child, when I decided brave the experience and stock up on groceries. With my toddler, Olyvia, age 2 in tow, and Elyas, 3 weeks, tucked in my baby sling, we headed into the grocery store.

Everything was going pretty smoothly. I had put the baby into the baby seat on the grocery cart and was gathering the items that I needed. After about 15 minutes, Elyas started getting fussy and Olyvia was picking things off the shelf at random and throwing them in my cart. While trying to keep up with her and putting back the items that I really didn't need, Elyas continued to fuss. I knew that I needed to nurse him. Tension started to build. I was starting to really feel the pressure of an inexperienced new mother of TWO!

Unexpectedly and from out of the blue, I felt a gentle tap on my shoulder. I turned in reaction to notice this little old lady saying, "Excuse me dear, but your milk is leaking."

I froze! I was devastated! The idea of having two huge wet spots on my shirt sent me into real panic and embarrassment. I started looking down at my blouse; just knowing that the baby fussing had caused me to "let-down" all over my shirt.

As I feverishly continued looking down at my shirt trying to see the obvious signs, the little lady said again, "Honey, your milk is leaking." I started to cry and in sheer frustration said "Where, where do you see me leaking?" Obviously confused, the little woman pointed and said, "there!"

To my surprise, she was pointing at my cart. There, in the cart, was the carton of milk toppled over and noticeably leaking out all over the floor! My tears turned to laughter as the little lady walked away with an exasperated expression on her face. My tears turned to laughter as I considered the scene. What a memorable experience, WHAT A DAY!
