It was about 11:30 a.m., time for Patrick's lunchtime
nursing session. He had just turned 4 months old, and was slowly
figuring out that grabbing things he wasn't supposed to have was quite
a lot of fun.

Just as we were getting settled into our favorite nursing chair,
the cordless phone that I keep next to the chair rang. It was my
husband calling from work to see how our day was going. I talked to
him for a few minutes, as Patrick grew more and more desperate in his
attempts to get my attention.
He kept making his "I'm hungry now" noise, (which sounded
suspiciously like "Ma-Ma" to me - which in reality was
probably something closer to "Ummmm-aaaaaaa") and grabbing
for the phone.
As I was getting ready to hang up the phone, I put it up to Patrick's
ear so he could hear Daddy for a minute. Patrick had other ideas about
talking on the phone. He swiftly managed to get the phone out of my
hand and with his little 4-month-old finger, he pushed the 'off'
button, looked straight up at me, and loudly shouted "UMMMMM-AAAAAA!"
then put the phone down in my lap. Then he laid his head down in the
crook of my arm in his regular nursing position, as if to say
"Mommy, I'm ready to nurse NOW!"
My husband and I got quite a laugh from how clearly our little guy was
able to communicate. I think it's the breastmilk that's making him
extra smart!
