An Iban Native Family

by Ahmad Jamil

I belong to an Iban native family of Sarawak, Malaysia. We have modernized on almost every aspect of our life and live in the city of Kuching.

Recently, I found some vintage pictures of my mom and me when I was still a baby (mid 1960's). My mom told me that during that time, we were still living in the jungle and hunting for food. The photographs were taken by an armature photographer (Mr. Lim Poh Chiang) and he was delighted to present some copies of his work after it was developed. I would like to share them with the rest of the world.

"You can take natives out of jungle but you cannot take jungle out of natives."

Two touching photos of Penan natives of Sarawak, Malaysia. The Penans are facing a bleak future to defend their life style. They are not against modernization. They are just hoping to continue their tradition alongside progress without the risk deportation and losing their land.
