Breastfeeding Long Distance

By Mariah P. LeBlanc

I am active duty military and am currently serving away from my family.

I left when my daughter was 6 months old.

I decided that I wanted to continue giving her Breastmilk even though I was not at home with her.

Before I left I pumped and froze the excess milk.

I left with over 300 bottles in the freezer.

I have been gone for 2 months and have another 6 weeks before I get to be with her.

I made a decision to continue pumping while away and over-night the milk home to her.

So far, things have worked out so well that I am even able to donate my extra milk to a local milk bank.

As hard as it is being away from my baby, I feel good knowing that even though I'm not there physically, I am still a big part of her day to day life and am the reason for her continued nourishment!

I look forward to re-establishing the nursing bond we had when I left!
