The Accident

It took a terrible accident for Jana to appreciate the gift of breastfeeding  by Jana Lantz

nurse_w_one1.jpg (23898 bytes)My name is Jana and I'm a 28-year-old wife and mom to four kids.  My oldest is 10 years old, my youngest is 11 weeks old, and in the middle I have an 8 year old and a 6 year old.

Four years ago I became disabled when I was struck by a car while walking on the sidewalk.   The car jumped the curb going 45 mph and struck me head on.  My right leg was shattered in five places between my knee and my ankle, and my left breast was ripped off my chest by the sideview mirror on the car.

Recovery from this was very hard, and I didn't think I would ever be able to have any more kids.  When it is your own decision it's one thing, but when the ability is taken from you it is hard to handle...for me it was anyway.  But on August 19th 1998 I got the shock of shocks...I was pregnant!

I decided then and there that regardless to the fact that I only had one breast, I was going to breastfeed.  I read everything I could and took classes.  I was determined.  I knew it would be hard, especially since I had failed at breastfeeding with my other three kids, but I was not going to let anything stop me.

Josiah was born on February 12th, 1999 and his birth is going to be one of the many births shown on the new season of TLC's "A Baby Story"! As I knew it would, breastfeeding him successfully has become my mission in life. And although I have had some problems with supply, he is breastfeeding!

It has been very hard but very worth it. I missed out on this with my other kids...I guess it took me losing one to see the awesome reason why we have breasts...to nourish our children.
