What You Need to Know About Nursing Pads and Creams

Nursing Pads

For virtually all breastfeeding moms, nursing pads are a great thing to have. Many nursing moms find their breasts leak fairly often during the first few months of breastfeeding, and nursing pads are a great, inexpensive way to prevent any embarrassing "leaking in public" situations as well as avoiding breastmilk stains on your clothing.

For many nursing moms, it is fairly common to be breastfeeding their baby on one breast, while the other breast begins to leak. Also, some moms find it helpful to wear a comfortable bra to bed (not an underwire!) so they can wear nursing pads to prevent leaking at night.

Nursing pads come in both washable, reusable versions and disposables. Both offer ample protection, and nursing moms generally seem to have a preference, so give both a try and see what you think! However, do not use a nursing pad that has a plastic lining.

Nipple Creams

Nursing mom may experience sore nipples during the first few days and weeks of breastfeeding. There are several ways to avoid and prevent sore nipples, including making sure the baby is properly latched on, and that you are holding the baby in a proper position so that she is not tugging at your breast.

There are also lanolin-based creams that can help relieve sore, dry sensitive nipples. When using a lanolin cream, make sure it is a purified, medical grade product, such as Lansinoh, to avoid allergic reactions. And if the cream is 100 percent natural, you can be sure it safe for both mother and baby.

A lanolin cream can be applied to the breasts after you shower, after each feeding and as often as you think you need it. There is no need to wash it off before nursing. When treating sore nipples, it is important to not use any harsh soaps, shower gels or other products on your breasts. Wash with clear warm water and either gently pat your breasts dry, or let them air dry.
