The Pacifier

By Marie Betz

This is a story about a baby who was not breastfed.

This baby was bottle fed, and was already three years old. From the time he was an infant his mother plopped a pacifier in his mouth. The pacifier became so engorged from sucking on it for so long. Whenever the mother tried to "wean" him onto a newer one, he balked.

The mother and father decided they needed a night out and asked a cousin to sit with their 3-year-old. The cousin took one look at the ugly misshapen pacifier and thought it was disgusting, and that it was time for the kid to be weaned off it.

They were re paving the road leading to their house, and the macadam was not yet poured down, only the huge gravel was in place. The baby-sitting cousin opened the front door and tossed the pacifier as far away as she could manage. Then the bedlam started. The baby screamed and screamed and screamed, and nothing would satisfy him.

When the parents returned around 1 AM, their son was still screaming, and the baby-sitter's boyfriend, and four neighbors were all out in the street, with flashlights, trying to find the blasted pacifier.

Now, if the mother had breastfed the baby no one would toss her breast out into the dark night!
