I am a mom of 9-month old twin boys and our breastfeeding experience
thus far has been full of hard work, dedication, and wonderful gratification.
I feel so proud that I have been able to nurse them exclusively without the need to supplement with formula.
Before the twins were born I read tons of books and spoke to many people about the experience of nursing twins.
One piece of advice
that I wish that I would have found was that it is okay to assign each
baby a breast and stick with that throughout nursing. Most of what I read seemed to indicate that even with twins you needed to switch
breasts. In the early days I had a hard enough time trying to keep track of who ate when and for how long to try and rotate breasts on
top of that. I also noticed that each breast had a different milk let
down pattern. One was very fast while the other was quite a bit slower. I decided for sanity's sake to simply assign a breast to each
baby. The poky nursery got the slow let down breast and the guzzler got
the faster breast. (I tried the other way too but the fast nurser would
end up hungry and frustrated while the slow nurser would drown in a gush of
milk LOL).
It suited their different nursing styles and I have not had any negative effects of not switching sides.
Especially when nursing more than one baby at a time you have to figure out what works for your situation and toss any advice that
simply doesn't fit with your style.
