During my pregnancy, I worked at a preschool. One of the little girls in my
class had a younger brother, who was being breastfed.
Our classroom had all
the "typical" toys of childhood, including dolls and bottles. The kids loved
taking care of the babies and feeding them with the bottles of disappearing
juice.
One day, though, we noticed this particular girl, sitting quietly on a
chair, with her shirt lifted and the doll at her breast. It was amazing to see her
modeling her mother's behavior in such a natural way.
It also served as a
reminder of how sometimes, as mothers, we encourage our daughters to bottle-feed their babies by giving them toys that fit the "norm," but don't
necessarily reflect what we know is the best.
