I wanted to share my story about my 16
month old son with all you nursing moms out there.
On
September 30th, my darling son took a tumble while playing on a
toddler gym in our playroom. He tried to protect his fall and
subsequently fractured his wrist. We rushed him to the emergence
room where two x-rays were taken. Much to our surprise they
didn't have a radiologist on call so no definite diagnosis was made
that evening. The next day we saw an orthopedic surgeon who took
yet another x-ray which revealed my son had a fractured wrist.
Jaden cried so hard during the x-ray that I knew the only thing that
would calm him was my breast. As we sat in the examining room
waiting for a doctor to return, Jaden exhausted and hurt, fell asleep
while nursing.
The doctor walked in and appeared to be embarrassed. He said he
would return in a few minutes. I quickly told him that Jaden was
asleep and pacifying himself. He stood there for a moment and
then asked if he could cast his arm while asleep. I was thrilled
to hear this and agreed. So the nurse and doctor together
applied the cast to my son's arm for close to 30 minutes while he lay
peacefully asleep suckling at my breast. My husband, who was
looking on, was amazed to observe how smoothly the casting went.
We both realized how frightening this procedure could have been if
Jaden were awake.
This whole experience just confirms it for me that nursing into
toddler hood is not only nurturing and nutritional, but it comes in
handy in time of need!
