Three years ago I gave birth to a 3-week-early baby boy,
Reece. Nursing him was far from easy. I ended up quitting at four
months due to a doctor telling me I had to because Reece had a weak
wind pipe and he was gasping for air while eating (little did I know
he knew nothing about breastfeeding). So I pumped by hand till he was
8 months old. After I switched him he developed soy and milk
allergies, and we had a long hard few years.
On October 5, 2000 I gave birth to my second baby boy, Tate. He
latched on easier, and I figured I was on my way...wrong! When Reece
saw me nursing the baby he said, "Baby chew the booby?" We
seemed to be doing it right, but after a few weeks, I got sore,
bleeding, cracked nipples. Chew the booby was right!
He was never satisfied even after nursing for an hour and not gaining
weight, so I got a Pump In Style and started pumping for him,
determined not to give up on breastfeeding. So I pumped and pumped and
pumped and tried to breastfeed him every day, but he was hungry after
every feeding, and I would pump and get 8 ounces per side after
feeding him, and 9 ounces before feeding him, so I figured he was not
nursing right.
I got a hold of a lactation consultant. We talked a bit and decided I
should drive the 275 miles to see her. Two days before the appointment
with her, Tate decided he was ready to nurse. I was vary happy and
hopeful, but we still went to see her just in case. We figured he was
only eating what dripped in his mouth. My nipple is vary large, and he
just couldn't get it in his mouth to suck properly, so he just needed
to grow into it.
He is now 3 months old and doing great! And we are loving every minute
of it!
On a side note, a story of our beastfeeding adventures:
I wanted to go to an auction, so off I went with baby in tow, also
dragging along a friend and my grandpa. There was an item I really
wanted coming up for bid, and Tate was getting hungry, so I hooked him
up and waited for my item to come up for bid. As it did and I waved my
number to bid, the auctioneer stumbled on his jumbled words. Well,
needless to say, I did get the item I was after and the auctioneer
remembered me and my number the rest of the auction!
