Posted On 06/30/2008 12:05:30 by myboyjoe
OK so I wnt to the OB and told her that my supply was very low and that I had to pump cuz my son has AR. Ok, So I was put on Reglan. I've been taking in for a week 4 times a day. I pump ever 3 hours from 8 am to 10 pm. I pump for 7 minutes per breast. I am still only getting 3/4 to1 1/2 oz at each pumping. I just don't know if I can take it. I'm just frustrated. I have tried to stop nursing but Joey gets so mad at me. So, please, what do I try now ? Please help, Please.

First off please, please do not stop nursing. This not only feeds your baby but satisfies his emotional needs as well thats why he's not happy that you've stopped. There's no reason why you can't nurse and pump. Also let me add that pumping is in no way an indication of your milk supply. Pumping ONLY tells you how much you can pump!! Thats it. Babies are much better at getting milk out of breast than a pump.
There are ways you can increase your supply while still nursing. When I needed to up my supply I would pump 10-15 mins. after my DD nursed for 48hrs straight. After the two days are over you should see an increase. You might want to try this.
Also if you are EPing then 7mins is not nearly enough time. If you are not nursing but pumping you should be pumping for longer periods each pump, 15-20mins.
Why are you not nursing?! Is there a reason you are pumping from 8-10pm? Do you work?

Joe will nurse between pumpings, but the milk is too thin and he chokes on it. Joe has Acid Reflux and it won't stay down. I co sleep and hold Joe as much as possible, even just because I want too. It's the emotional attachment that I don't want to mess up, and as much as we both love to nurse, we really can't. Pumping is the only option.

I pumped for 7 minutes when I started off, I pumped for 20 this morning (2 1/2 oz !!!!!). It hurts and with Joe nursing too it feels like I've been rubbed raw with sand paper and the nipple cream only helps so much. Right now Joe is still too young for me to go back to work. I'm a single mom and child care is hard to find. I have a very good boy . He's in bed on his own by 9 pm and sleeps through the night, wakes up at 7am. By the time I get Joe fed and settled in his swing for his morning nap it's nearly 8am. Same at night. I have an hour of 'Mommy Time' where I get everything done that I couldn't find time to do during the day. By the time I fall into bed I can barly keep my eyes open.

What kind of pump are you using? Do your breasts FEEL like they have milk in them and you just aren't able to get the milk OUT? What is AR? For my first son I used an electric Medela pump--I rented it. Then I got an avent hand pump, it takes more time to pump by hand but I actually really like that pump too. Sometimes gently massaging the breasts can stimulate milk and you can also try heat, maybe put a hot towel on before pumping.

AR is Acid Reflux. I talk to my mom alot on messanger and often shorten my words. I am using an Evenflow Elan pump. It's the only one that works, I've rented a few hospital grade and I'm still engorged AFTER I pump. The vaccum isn't strong enough cuz Joe's got a very strong latch. When I nurse, He chokes on it. The BM is too thin and it comes right back up. So I really have no chioce when it comes to pumping. Oh yes, I can feel when I need to pump. I walk around in a sweatshirt most of the time to keep my chest as warm as possible. I massage before I pump and halfway through. I'm going to bust out the heating pad today even with the incress. I pumped 2 1/2 oz this morning. : )
