Baby not pooped.....help!
Posted On 07/12/2008 21:44:26 by Shasav

My 4 month old baby is exclusively breast fed....has gone without pooping for the longest for a week and this has happened about 4-5 times. The consistency of the poo is normal. I started him on rice cereal (very watery) 5 days ago..just once a day. He pooped normal for 2 consecutive days but has not pooped after that to date. He passes a lot of wind (smelly). Should I stop the cereal ? I still breastfeed him. Is he constipated ? He is a happy baby, no signs of discomfort whatsoever. Any words of advice, comfort, solution ? I will take him to the doctor on Monday if he does not poop by then. Thank you.

If babe is happy I wouldnt worry.  I would be hesitant to intro any juice or anything like that unless your child is uncomfortable.  I would also becareful of Dr.  My sons first doc said he should be pooing everyday and to give him suppositories if he wasnt going everyday.  In the begining I didnt know any better- luckilly that didnt feel right to me so I researched.  What a stupid doctor, if I hadnt researched it I could have hurt my son!

What has helped me in the past
one thing -- putting juice with the cereal instead of water or formula - cereal has iron in it and the baby juice has vitamin C which helps baby absorb the iron
another thing -- is making sure I have been drinking enough water
another thing is me taking a good probiotic -- it helps the baby through your milk -- keep you and the baby going regularly!
the last thing is to try oatmeal instead of the rice -- my babies seemed to do better with that than rice for some reason

If he is happy, then i would not worry about it.
