Antibiotics

Hello, ladies! I have recently been put on Keflex or the generic name is Cephalexin for a tick bite. Is this antibiotic okay to use while nursing? In the list of side effects it said that if you have allergies to penicillin you should not take this medicine. My son is allergic to penicillin. Will it pass through enough to cause him side effects? Will my milk supply decrease if I am taking this antibiotic? He is almost exclusively breastfed at nine months because he has so many allergies. He will not take a bottle and hates soy formula (he is allergic to milk). If I have to supplement is it okay to use rice milk?

Yuck. Ticks are so gross. My kids just found one and flushed it down the potty!
Per Dr. Hale and his Medications and Mother's Milk book, Keflex is only minimally excreted in mom's milk. The only thing to watch for is looser stools in baby.
Of more concern is the natural flora (good bacteria) in your gut being decreased which can set you up for a yeast infection.
I would recommend taking probiotics.

For sure check with the ped dr. but i'm almost sure that it will pass thru to him. your dr can tell you if the amount that does pass is enough to cause a reaction. it might be so small and diluted that your son won't even notice. i don't know about any of the other questions
