sour nipples?

I was reminded of a story I heard a few months ago.  A mother offered up some suggestions on weaning---honestly, I don't even remember how the subject arose because I am certainly not interested in weaning.  Anyway, she explained to me that she had to put this stuff on her nipples to get her baby to stop nursing.  I guess it made them taste really sour and awful.  I didn't know the woman very well and I don't know the circunstances about her decision to do this but.....I don't know.  It was very unsettling to me.  I could never do that to my son.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing weaning at all.  I just think that forced weaning can be an extremely difficult and emotional for the mother and child and it needs to handled in a caring and loving way.  I didn't say anything to the woman, because it really wasn't any of my business (although she was the one that brought it up).  Maybe I just feel sorry for the baby more than anything. Any thoughts?

OMG. I feel like you do. I totally believe in child led weaning and think it is cruel to make a babies favorite thing become awful. How upsetting for the child. I do feel bad for that baby.

Right now I have a big problem with my second child.  At home he screams if I don't nurses him.  He's almost 2 and I breastfed my first until he was 2, but by 18 months it was just at night, to go to sleep. This boy just wants a little "nip" and then he's off. I offer him cups of milk or juice or something to eat instead, but if I'm sitting down (which we all need to do sometimes) he's straight for the "boobie". It's getting ridiculous. And I'm a big breastfeeding supporter.  Any ideas on solving my problem?
