Creating Privacy when Breast Pumping in Public~ Why I Created the Carmeleon
Posted On 08/05/2008 14:26:58 by Carmeleon_Mom

As with many successful products, the Carmeleon was created out of necessity. When I returned to work, my son was 8-weeks old. I completely believed (and still do!) in the benefits of breastfeeding and had planned on breast pumping. Since I couldn't find a comfortable private place to pump at work, my car seemed like a safe place where I could relax, pump and listen to music or a book on tape. I started off by hanging blankets and coats for privacy. However, they were bulky, cumbersome and fell down most of the time. Pondering this predicament, an idea came to me. I pulled out the "old-reliable" Singer sewing machine and began creating a motor vehicle privacy shield that I could use when nursing or breast pumping. Since then, the Carmeleon has taken up residence in our car!

In addition, I found other uses for the Carmeleon. I was able to secure it to the rear side window of the car in order to prevent direct sunlight from shining into my son's eyes. My husband used it early in the morning when getting a quick nap before a golf game. I also attached it to the front windshield on hot days to keep the sun and heat out of my car.

When my second child was born, my daughter was 3-months old when I returned to work. I was extremely comforted knowing I could use the Carmeleon to create a discrete, private place to breast pump in my car. I was able to pump everyday in the privacy of my own car, thus reaching my personal goal of nursing for one year while working. The Carmeleon was one of my essential baby products. When parked in a public setting such as the mall, beach, school or Target parking lot I was able to nurse my daughter comfortably in private. My nursing experience for both my children has been an enjoyable, peaceful and forever a positive memory because of the Carmeleon. I am very excited to share this product with Mothers who are looking for privacy in the midst of their busy, busy lives.
