Feeding Time is Playtime
Posted On 08/10/2008 22:14:44 by mmcarthur
What can I do?  My three month old keeps playing with me when I try to feed him.  He roots and I put him to breast.  He'll take in a little milk and then pops off to smile or laugh at me.  It's super cute but feedings like this take forever.  When he starts to play I assume he's finished and sit him up to burp but the minute I do he starts to root again.  Anyone else out there experiencing this?  What can I do?  I don't know if he's hungry or self-soothing.

Yep, my 4 mos. old does this, too. I just stop the feeding and play.  I've also found that nursing in a quiet place  helps keep him from getting distracted.  I also find my little guy rooting and putting his hands to his mouth a lot, but I don't necassarily think he's hungry.  I think he's just going to be  a thumb sucker, so maybe your little man will be too.  Good luck, I know it can be frustrating.  He'll nurse when he's hungry.

My 4 month old son does exactly the same thing occasionally.  He actually was doing it last night! He'd been up for a few ours already which is the Max he can stay up so he was getting fussy, I started breastfeeding him, he would take it, then about 2-3 minutes later, he'd de-latch and start playing around talking, laughing, then he'd start feeding again, then stop and laugh a little, I was laughing at him too!   I couldn't help it! But when I knew it was his bed time, I would get up with him, walk around while still feeding and then eventually he would go in and out of sleep. If you can hold your son while feeding him and walk around at the same time, that's how my son goes to sleep most of the time. But last night, I just said to myself that he wasn't going to eat anymore, so I put him down and he didn't fuss at all, he went right to sleep!  Everyones different!  But you'll find a happy medium!

ITA with the previous advice. My ds does the same thing. He wants to see and do everything. The nursing necklace does wonders for me. It gives him something to look at and play with, but keeps his mouth on me. Good luck!
