breastmilk and cereal
Posted On 09/24/2008 10:43:53 by ShawnMattysMama

Just wondering how everyone gets the breastmilk to mix into the rice/oatmeal cereal to make it. I had a very hefty supply in stock of frozen BM (to the point where we needed to store it at other peoples houses also...) I'm now down to my last 10 bags just about. I'm not sure what to do after that's gone. I haven't been pumping unless he is away from me which is usually only 1 or 2 times a week and for 1 feeding only. But I'll need to use that pumped milk soon for his feeding because I won't have anymore in stock. Do I pump in between feedings?

to mix the cereal in the milk, I just put a tablespoon or two in the bottle with milk and then warm it up so it gets good and mixed together.  I started that when my son was 4 months.  Going into the 5th month is when I started spoon feeding the cereal, and now on the 28th, we'll hit the 6th month and we'll start one veggie!!!But of course still the breastmilk.

As far as pumping, I would pump a bottle in the morning when I woke up and any left overs I would freeze, and then I would breastfeed for a nap and then pump twice before he woke up from his nap and that would make about 6 oz total.  But I get what you are saying about running out of frozen milk.  You just have to do what you did in the beginnig to save it up again!  I did that same thing, ran out, then I had to just pump more often to get my supply back up again!  It will work out! No worries!

Try to choose two times a day, at the same time, to establish a new supply for cereal supplementation. Prolactin levels are highest in the early morning and late evening; pumping the same time every day (say 7:00 a.m and 7:00 pm) signals to the brain to produce milk at these times - hopefully every day producing a wee bit more  :)
Do this in additional to your nursing sessions.
