Self led weaning
Posted On 10/07/2008 11:55:21 by jecrae2002
My DS just turned 10 mos. He had a terrible virus for 2 weeks and now when he nurses he pulls off constantly. He doesn't seem interested anymore. Is he starting to wean himself? We cosleep right now and in the middle of the night he still nurses but he pulls off for 1 min then comes back and this can go on for an hour or so before he finally falls back to sleep. Maybe he is teething but when he has theed before he didn't do this. I am ok withhim weaning himself, but I don't know if that is what is going on.

The only way a child self weans at 8-11mo. is if there is not an appropriate balance between the intake of solids and breastmilk or formula.

Breastmilk or formula should be a child's main nutrition for the first year of life, not solid foods. As mom's it is up to us to make sure that balance is maintained regardless of what the child appears to be more interested in.

If you DS is taking solids in rather than BM at this point I would reduce the his solid intake and replace those feedings with BM. BM has higher caloric value, fat and nutrition than any solid you could offer your son.

Honestly, i know several people (including myself) who's babies weaned themselves and 8-11 months is the average age of the weaning.  From the sound of it, it is a possibility that is just what he may be doing.

It is very rare for a baby to wean themselves at that age. I know some babies can go through a nursing strike. http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/baby/back-to-breast.html#strike

Did he nurse less while he was sick? Perhaps your supply is slightly low and that is what is causing the frustration? If so, I'd try to nurse as much as possible and/or pump in order to boost your supply back up.
