My son wouldn't drink out of a sippy cup with the no-spill valve in. After taking the valve out he started using the cup like a pro.

My daughter teethed with a sippy the first couple of ti,es too. Then she realized there's something in there! She then took to it I tried the kind with the handles and repeated "both hands" walked away as she lifted and drank. there are many types on tippies. UI tried without the stopper SHE GOT IT THEN i REALIZED SHE WAS getting to much, put the stopper back in. She lets me know she is done by throwing it on the floor, but with the stopper no mess!!    :-)mom2zoemi

You child sounds normal to me. When he's ready to move to a cup, he'll do it. Question, though, when you are feeding him a meal, have you tried just giving him a cup without a lid. You'll have to hold it for him, of course, but some babies find this easier to drink from. Also, I have found using a small baby bottle, without the ring and nipple works well as a first cup. The smaller opening is easier to manage and little ones seem to do well with just a minimum of help. Just don't put much liquid in it at all to start. You can always put more in if he drinks it all. I'd definitely not bother with trying to get him to take a rubber nipple at this point. I just don't see any purpose to it,
