Does anyone know how long it takes for food & meds to pass through breastmilk? My Dr. thinks approx. 4-6 hrs, my mom says 24-48 hrs.....  I've been recently diagnosed w/ Rheumatoid Arthritis & will most likely have to take meds at some point.  I may need to pump & dispose for a few days & it would be nice to know this~ thanks

I THINK IT TAKES ABOUT HALF AN HOUR

The answer is it depends...on how long it will take your body to process whatever you put into your stomach.  Most adults' digestive system works on a 4-6 hour time table, again, depending on what you ate.  A steak will take a lot longer than a piece of toast with butter.  As for meds, it also depends on how fast acting the drug is and if you have an empty stomach or not.  You know how your headache meds can take 15 minutes or 2 hours to take effect. As a rule liquids are absorbed faster than solids.  If your pain is not too acute tylenol may be enough.  Every doctor I've spoken to, and article I've read say that when not exceeding the daily dosage, Tylenol is baby safe.  I am unaware of any meds that are baby safe and can reduce inflamation.

Good luck
