Strange feeding habits
Posted On 04/05/2008 20:52:14 by intokermit
My son is 5 weeks old, and unfortualty I can't breastfeed him. I do pump every 3 hours, or whenever I can, and give him about 4 ounces per feeding. This still isn't enough for him, though, and he will eat at least 2 more ounces of formula on top of it. Also, he will eat and eat between the hours of 7p.m. and 10 p.m. He'll finish 4 ounces of breastmilk, fall asleep, then 20 minutes later wants more. So we'll give him 2 ounces of formula, and he'll sleep for about 20 min., then want more. Is this all normal? Anyone else with this problem?

As for him eating 4 oz every 3-4 hours, that is normal at this age.  Breastmilk is very easy to digest.  For your 7-10pm I have an idea.  Go ahead and feed baby his 4oz at 7pm.  When he wakes up in 20 minutes keep him awake for a little while.  Talk to baby, play, etc, for as long as you can.  Maybe an hour? 90 min? Then give him a bath.  The bath helps calm baby down after all that fun.  Then give him breast or bottle.  Offer the full 4oz of formula/milk.  Then lay him down.  He should be so tired and full that he will sleep 3-4 hours.  Also, resist the urge to pick up baby if he stirs or makes a bit of noise.  Babies are notorious loud sleepers.  I know I have been found guilty of fully waking up my babies when they simply were getting a bit more comfy in their own beds.

Good Luck
