How often.......
Posted On 04/18/2008 12:50:45 by tatersmom

How often do you pump?  I'm trying to get a supply built up so that I (as much as I hate it) can have some free time from the baby to spend with my other children and also give my husband the opportunity to feed the baby from time to time.  I had a great supply built up but took ill about a week ago and all though I did still nurse him as often and I could, I just couldn't stay awake or out of the bathroom long enough to me his demands.  I've recently started pumping again, but like I did recently, I only pump once a day because I'm always afraid I won't have enough milk when he does go to the breast to eat ( which I know there is enough).  Does anyone have any recommendations on a "pumping schedule"?  He is now almost 6 weeks old and he LOVES to eat (he was born at 6lbs 15oz on March 10 & at 5 weeks, he weighed 10lbs 3oz).

Thanks!

I dont have the supply my baby needs (she is a big eater) but i've found that drinking mamas milk tea with meals and as a refreshment has helped increase my supply.  It is a lot of work to drink so much and to pump so often, but if you are determined that your baby has BM then it is totally worth it!  It will also increase the nutritional value of your milk too (or so I've been told)  Ive been on Reglan for a week and i do believe the tea works better than the reglan, for me....plus it is natural...i pump every two hours while at work (once before i come to work) for 10 or 15 min.  Then when i get home i will feed my little one and immediately pump for at minumim 5 min.-try for 10 but that doesn't always happen

The LC at the hospital told me to nurse then pump immediately following the nursing. She said that would build my suppy and keep me from nursing and pumping all day. Good luck! Sounds like you are going to have a big healthy boy!

I have a 6 month old, work full time, and on wkds she usually is with her father (divorce).  To maintain supply I pump everytime she should b/f but, is at daycare or daddy's.  To increase supply I pump 1 hour after baby  ate for 10 min on each side.  When baby was younger, like 2 months old, I used to feed one side for as long as she wanted and pump the other.  At the next feeding I would switch the breasts so that each breast get full stimulation.  This earlier method caused me to produce so much milk that I donated almost 200 oz when baby was 3 months old.  So that is why I switched to the current method.
