Breast feeding - help
Posted On 05/11/2008 16:51:10 by anika
my 5 day old baby has a watery bowel movements and screams within15- 20 minutes of breastfeeding.  She seems to be ok when I give her formula.  When she has a bowel movement after the formula she does not cry.  Can something in my  breast milk be causing her to react this way.  I eat relatively healthy so I don't think it is my diet?

I have not breatfed since last night because I don't want her to scream like she is  pain.  She has been like this the past 2 days.

Thanks.  I tried the gas drops last night and they seem to help a little.  A friend also told me to try massaging her tummy and it seem to comfort her to some degree.

It may be what you are eating. Things like onions, tomatoes, brocolli, cauliflower will make a baby have gas, even though they are health for you. Also, any foods that are known to cause gas, such as beans, will also effect a baby. To much fried foods are also hard on a tiny tummy. Breastmilk is more quickly digested, and looser stools are normal.  If your hospital has a lactation consultant, I would contact them. You may also become engorged because you have not nursed, and that can cause more problems for you.  I would keep nursing her, that way she doesn't have nipple confusion, and then when you are ready to nurse again, she might not be able. You might want to try gas drops for babies, they are safe, and help, too.
