Appropriate age to stop?
Posted On 05/14/2008 16:20:33 by MNAHAKU
So my son is about to turn 1 and everyone I know (and dont know) keeps asking me why I have not stopped breastfeeding him???? Since birth my son has refused bottles, cups, sippy cups ect. and will only be 1 in June....I am not really in a rush to stop! Any advise on what to say/handle unwanted comments.

Is there any medical reasons to stop now...  As far as I know the longer the better RIGHT?

youre absolutely right, you should breastfeed as long as your children want to.
I am currently breastfeeding both my girls who are 6 years old & 3 years old, & I am not stopping anytime soon, im also pregnant with my third, who is due in a month.
Dont stop until youre ready, keep breastfeeding as long as you & your kids want to, & dont worry about others, its not their business.

The World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding until at least age 2.  The American Association of Pediatrics states until age 1 or thereafter as long as is desired (or something like that).  There is a lot of information on extended nursing out there.  Go to kellymom.com.  Good luck! :)

Don't let anyone make you feel like you should stop nursing just because they "feel" your son is to old to nurse! As long as you and baby are both healthy there are no medical reasons why you cannot keep nursing him. I weaned my third child around at a yr old because I to felt presured to and I so wish that I just let my baby decide when he wanted to wean ( within reason) I felt sad and guilty. Just trust me if your heart says you and your son are not ready to give up that bond than don't. I am currently nursing my 10 mo old and I am not weaning until we are ready to wean! Besides nursing still has great benefits for mom and baby after 12 mos too. Stand your ground just tell everyone else to back off.
