Posted On 06/30/2008 12:05:30 by myboyjoe
OK so I wnt to the OB and told her that my supply was very low and that I had to pump cuz my son has AR. Ok, So I was put on Reglan. I've been taking in for a week 4 times a day. I pump ever 3 hours from 8 am to 10 pm. I pump for 7 minutes per breast. I am still only getting 3/4 to1 1/2 oz at each pumping. I just don't know if I can take it. I'm just frustrated. I have tried to stop nursing but Joey gets so mad at me. So, please, what do I try now ? Please help, Please.

First off please, please do not stop nursing. This not only feeds your baby but satisfies his emotional needs as well thats why he's not happy that you've stopped. There's no reason why you can't nurse and pump. Also let me add that pumping is in no way an indication of your milk supply. Pumping ONLY tells you how much you can pump!! Thats it. Babies are much better at getting milk out of breast than a pump.
There are ways you can increase your supply while still nursing. When I needed to up my supply I would pump 10-15 mins. after my DD nursed for 48hrs straight. After the two days are over you should see an increase. You might want to try this.
Also if you are EPing then 7mins is not nearly enough time. If you are not nursing but pumping you should be pumping for longer periods each pump, 15-20mins.
Why are you not nursing?! Is there a reason you are pumping from 8-10pm? Do you work?

What kind of pump are you using?  Do your breasts FEEL like they have milk in them and you just aren't able to get the milk OUT?  What is AR?  For my first son I used an electric Medela pump--I rented it. Then I got an avent hand pump, it takes more time to pump by hand but I actually really like that pump too.  Sometimes gently massaging the breasts can stimulate milk and you can also try heat, maybe put a hot towel on before pumping.
