Breastfeeding in Public (UK)
Posted On 05/12/2008 09:00:01 by jay2120
I am happily breastfeeding my 6 week old baby and it seems to be going very well. However i am reluctant to leave my house with her as i scared that she'll want feeding when we are out in public. I am not sure how people will respond to breastfeeding in public and how welcoming it is in restaurants etc. I do plan to express in the coming weeks so that i can have a bottle of milk ready for her as and when she may need it. However i don't want to rely on having bottle but want to get over the fear of feeding her in public. I guess i am just looking for some support from other breastfeeding mums who may have also felt this way at the beginning and how they overcame it.

I usually save juice for when i leave the house that way you dont need to breastfeed in public, however I have been caught in these times and I usually sit in the car or go in a restroom.  Its only for a few minutes.  Also my baby usually sleeps everytime he is in a carrier so thats what I do when im grocery shopping.

I agree.  Find a quiet corner, I too do not like nursing in public but sometimes you just have to.  There are covers to can velvro around your neck..my little one hates to have a blanket over her head and will push it off..this way you will stay covered..i've decided BFing in public is an art form and some women are just gifted in that area, they can BF and no one knows it.. i have a friend that is really good at it-we were at a resturant once with a lot of friends and no one even knew that she fed her little one while we were there!  and i was at the mall a week or so ago and there was a mommy BFing that was so descreet that only a BFing mom would notice what she was doing...My hat is off to you for facing your fear!..it may also help if you practice at home-sounds funny but that is how i got better at being discreet-the old saying.."practice makes perfect" fits well:o) Good Luck!!

DS is 10months and I still have a fear of BF in public... I Feel like everyone will stare...  I know that most probably wont notice - so long as he doesnt become distracted and leave my breast hanging in the wind so to speak.  Try to find a quiet corner if you can- just to make yourself more comfortable.  I''ve found most people are actually supportive!  Goodluck!
