Won't drink Milk
Posted On 02/28/2009 19:00:02
I am having a hard time getting my 1 year old son to drink milk. I've been trying for a while and have been able to drink about a half a sippy cup a day for the past two days. This is only because I have mixed half of the milk with juice. Yes this sounds absolutly disgusting but he'll drink it and I'm desperate. I don't have much pumped milk left and I don't get any when I pump now anyways but he wouldn't even drink my pumped milk out of a cup. Right now he is still nursing twice a day, we've been weaning for about a week. If anyone has any other suggestions please let me know!

Febrile Seizures
Posted On 02/28/2009 18:55:26

I have had the scariest week of my life and I can't wait for this nightmare to be over. My husband woke up Monday night at about 3:30because he was all stuffed up and heard the baby making a weird sound on the monitor. He went in to check on him and he started have a seizure. He had his 1 year shots that day, MMR and Chicken Pox and was given motrin before bedtime because he had a slight fever. He also has an ear infection (#5) for 11 days at that point with the medication doing nothing and had gotten put on Augmentin that day. We don't know exactly what the fever was from but my husband came running in with him and called 911. We spent 7 hours at the ER mostly being ignored and not attended too. Awful experience! We were not given much information at all. We took him home and was keeping up with stacking the tylenol and motrin. I went to bed with him in my bed that night at about 10:30 with his fever again beginning to rise. My husband was staying up until 12 when he was due for more Motrin. I dozed off and on waking up to every little noise or movement. Minutes before he was supposed to have more motrin I shrieked for my husband because he again began seizing. I hadn't seen the first one. Just let me tell you that I hope none of you have to ever experience watching that. It's the most helpless and scariest feeling. We again called 911 and went to the ER to once again feel like we were being ignored. When we were finally seen by the doctor after 3 hours of being in the room and it not seeming to be very busy out there at all I was told that he is reluctant to say that it was actually a seizure. He's more leaning towards it being shivers from having the fever. If my son wasn't sleeping on my chest I probably would've got up and punched this man in the face! I am not a moron, we know what we were watching! Thankfully my husband had stepped out for a moment to make a phone call to my sister so he wasn't in there when he said that. I told the Dr that I need to know what I'm supposed to do if this happens again. His response was "well first of all you need to stop calling an ambulance" My mouth hit the floor... was he joking? My 1 year old has a seizure and I'm not supposed to call an ambulance and be worried and petrified?

Basically my husband and I had to educate ourselves on febrile seizures via the internet. We have read that they are harmless to the child as long as they don't injure themselves on something. But this ER Dr told us that we could treat him at home and just try to control his fever. Everything we read said to bring him to his Pedi and if they were closed go to the ER. Even though I can't understand how they could possibly be harmless to a child's brain, it makes me feel slightly better but not less worried at all. I just don't ever want to have to watch that again.

So now my son is scheduled to have tubes put in on March 12. I was reluctant a few months ago and even on Monday at his appointment I was still reluctant. My mind was completely changed by Wednesday. I don't ever want to have to watch that again and will do anything possible to avoid it. He gets very high fevers with his ear infections so this is step one to ending this nightmare.

Having a feeding problem..
Posted On 11/07/2008 10:44:01

I am having so much pain when my son feeds on my left breast. He has two bottom teeth and two top teeth and has two more coming in on the top. I don't think it's from the latch because I don't think that an 8 month old could just start latching wrong. On the left side of my areola, very close to my nipple are a couple of bumps that don't seem like the normal ones that are there when you get cold or whatever. They're kind of just swollen all the time. I read something about milk blisters? Not sure if that's what it is though but there is more than one. Has anyone every experienced these or know what I could do. I was in labor for 12 hours and didn't make a peep but I want to scream while he's eating because it hurts so bad!!

I'm sorry for being quite graphic, but I just don't know how else to explain it and that's what this thing is for anyways right?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Oh also I don't want to call my doctors office because they are pretty much A-holes and my doctor left the practice there but doesn't start at her new office until Monday so I don't want to deal with them.

breastmilk and cereal
Posted On 09/24/2008 07:43:53

Just wondering how everyone gets the breastmilk to mix into the rice/oatmeal cereal to make it. I had a very hefty supply in stock of frozen BM (to the point where we needed to store it at other peoples houses also...) I'm now down to my last 10 bags just about. I'm not sure what to do after that's gone. I haven't been pumping unless he is away from me which is usually only 1 or 2 times a week and for 1 feeding only. But I'll need to use that pumped milk soon for his feeding because I won't have anymore in stock. Do I pump in between feedings?

Ear Infection :(
Posted On 09/16/2008 08:28:44
My poor little man has an ear infection! The first time he's really been sick (7 months old on friday) and it's heart breaking. He wasn't even pulling at his ears at all and wasn't really having a hard time sleeping or eating, the eating was spread out a little more but he still was eating. Then last night he wouldn't eat before bed and his temp went from 100.2 to 102 in a half hour and that was with tylenol after the 100.2. He woke up this morning without a fever but I still made an appointment and I'm very glad I did. I was surprised to hear ear infection... I thought breastfed babies are supposed to be protected from ear infections? My husband took him to the appointment because of my home daycare so I couldn't talk to the doctor about it. And on that note the kiddos just woke from nap #1.....

Sweet smelling breath?
Posted On 09/13/2008 18:45:31

My son has had sweet smelling breath/saliva for a few weeks now. It started a week before his first tooth popped but I don't know if that's just a coincidence. He bites his blankie's (that he needs with him all the time) and I was it and then after one nap it smells already. Sometimes it makes his hands smell too because he bites them so much.

Has this ever happened to anyone before or does anyone know what this could be from? I don't want my baby to be smelly It didn't really bother me until my husband said "we have the smelly kid hunny" and I got mad.

I brush his gums/teeth twice a day.....

How often for solids?
Posted On 09/10/2008 07:59:06
I was wondering how many times a day you feed your baby solids? My son is almost 7 months and I just moved him up to twice a day. But the nutrition from bm is still better then the food right? So anyone that wants to, could you let me know how many times a day for solids and at what age? thanks!

Sleeping a lot... from teething?
Posted On 09/08/2008 07:41:10
My son has been teething and his 2 bottom teeth have popped out. He has been sleeping so much!!! I'm not complaining I want him to rest if he needs to but I just didn't know if that's normal. I've heard of them not sleeping because of the pain but he seems to be always tired like all weekend would wake up want to eat and maybe play for 10-15 minutes and then be whining to lay down again. The only other thing though is that he wants to lay on me to fall asleep and I can not be out of his sight. He has always been a baby that I could lay in his crib drowsy but awake and he would fall asleep on his own with his music. Has anyone else experienced anything like this?
