Breastfeeding in Public (UK)
Posted On: 05/12/2008 09:00:01
I am happily breastfeeding my 6 week old baby and it seems to be going very well. However i am reluctant to leave my house with her as i scared that she'll want feeding when we are out in public. I am not sure how people will respond to breastfeeding in public and how welcoming it is in restaurants etc. I do plan to express in the coming weeks so that i can have a bottle of milk ready for her as and when she may need it. However i don't want to rely on having bottle but want to get over the fear of feeding her in public. I guess i am just looking for some support from other breastfeeding mums who may have also felt this way at the beginning and how they overcame it.

a wonderful tip for feeding in public is to buy a hand full of spagetti strap tank tops (mine are white) and instead of adjusting the strap leave it loose so that the neck line of the tank top can be pulled down below your bra. then just wear your normal shirts over the top. that ways when you pull the top shirt up and the undershirt down the only area exposed will be where baby nurses. practice at home and if front of mirrors until you are comfortable. in restaurants alway ask for a booth, scoot to the far inside and if you're more comfortable ask you husband or who ever is eating with you if they would sit next to you while you nurse (they will naturaly be a shield)I have many more ideas. let me know if you want more

I have nursed all three of my babies, and each one it gets a little easier to nurse in public. So, I think it just takes time.  With my oldest I would sit in the car, restrooms, dressingrooms, but now I'll nurse in a quite area, if it available, but sometimes, you just have to sit in the middle of the mall and do it. Public restrooms are often times dirty, so I avoid those now. I tell my husband I wouldn't take my steak dinner in there, why should he(son)? It isn't much fun to sit alone, though. Learn to be discreet at home, and it isn't as uncomfortable in public. There are still times, like yesterday, when we were eating with my pastor, his wife, daughter, and 12 yr. old son, that I just waited the few minutes, to go home. You might find that your little one won't take a bottle from you or when you are around, so you might have to go with someone else if you plan on using the bottle. My little boy won't take a bottle if he knows that I am around. Good luck! Be confident, you are doing the best and natural thing for you little one!
