sleeping through the night & routine
Posted On: 05/13/2008 08:05:34

After reading some of the other blogs about babies as young as 7 weeks old sleeping through the night i was wondering how have those mums achieved this? Please share you secret!!

Have you put the babies on strict routines so that they will be fed and woken up at certain times to achieve this as per the Gina Ford regime or has it happened naturally feeding on demand? I feed my daughter exclusively on breastmilk every 2 - 3 hours on demand.

My doctor told me that bf babies eat more often b/c their bodies digest bm faster (b/c it is natural).  All the additives in formula take longer for baby to digest so they are full longer.

Every baby is different and have different appetites.  If you don't already, try co-sleeping..sometimes i don't even notice when my daugter nurses she just knows what to do..i may wake up once a night but it wasn't until she was three months old did she really start sleeping more at night

I believe that you need to meet in the middle. A stict routine will stress out your baby(called hyperscheualing) and on demand feeding will wear you out. 2-3 hours based upon a hunger cue is approriate. My son started to sleep longer around 7-8 weeks. instead of feeding your baby everytime he wakes up in the middle of the night start streching it out. if he nurses every three hours at night start making him go four. you can rock he back to sleep or give him a pacifier in between. its called parent directive feeding

My oldest (he is 5 now)  was not breastfed and he slept thru the night when he was 3 days old.  My 5 month old is exclusively breastfed and is just now sleeping through the night.  I think breastfed babies tend to not sleep through the night right away because your body needs too adjust to breastfeeding.  I think once your milk is well established your baby will begin too sleep longer.  While my son sleeps most of the night (9-6 am) he still eats every 2 hours during the day and in the evening he eats a little every half hour or so till he goes to sleep.  I think a routine is important but my sons routine is usually made by him and changes day to day.  I still try to do 1 nap the same time everyday and bath the same time and bed time the same time.
